Fantastic Flyball Fundraiser!
Thanks to everyone who made the Victoria Day Weekend Spring Flyball Tournament a success. We
had a great time meeting supporters and watching the fun and we raised $600 in support of the Shelter!
We truly appreciate the ongoing support of the FastnFURious team as well as our dedicated
Special Event Volunteers who made it all possible. On behalf of the animals, we thank you.
Introducing our

The P.E.I. Humane Society has launched a new initiative aimed at increasing
cat adoptions at the Island’s only Shelter for homeless animals. The “Fancy Felines”
program was conceived when the Society was approached by three animal-loving Islanders particularly interested in helping more Shelter cats find
homes.
In early 2008, Teresa Arsenault of Slemon Park contacted the Society and offered
to donate her services creating fancy crocheted cat collars like the ones she had fashioned for her own pets. “My
cat, Plussette, is a Diva at heart and loves her fancy, crocheted collars.” says Arsenault.
“When I heard about the over-population of cats at the PEI Humane Society, I sent some samples to them and was thrilled when they asked me to send
more. I hope my small effort will result in many forever homes for some very worthy cats.”
During this same period, Jane Thomas and Harry Smith of Bonshaw approached the
Society with their wish to help motivate cat adopters by subsidizing $50 of the $145 cat adoption fee for particular cats.
“Our goal is to help the Society reach its goal of increasing adoptions, especially of those beautiful
animals that have been at the Shelter the longest,” explains Thomas. “We hope this
program will help highlight the wonderful animals available at the P.E.I. Humane Society, and tug at the heartstrings of those who want to help
provide a loving home for a special cat who has waited so long.”
Matisse,
her son Munch and her foster kitten Whistler, (all residents at the Shelter since August, 2007) were chosen as our first “Fancy
Felines”. We were delighted when Munch was adopted within 2 days of the program starting on Saturday, March 1st. Matisse and
Whistler hope they will finally find their forever homes quickly too!
The program will continue to feature two or three of the longest-term
residents on the Cat Adoption Floor, and these animals will be easily identified by their “Fancy Feline” cat collar and special kennel
cage signage.
“Looking at our statistics, we know Islanders are really beginning to
embrace our message to ‘Make Adoption Your First Option’,” adds Heather Irving,
Executive Director of the Society. “Our cat adoptions are already up by 16% this year, but when we look at the number of cats constantly
coming into our care, we know we’ve still got a long way to go before we’re finding the majority of them new homes.”
